Simian Mobile Disco – Temporary Pleasure (REVIEW)

New Album: Temporary Pleasure – 17th August 2009
Simian Mobile Disco will be releasing a brand-new album ‘Temporary Pleasure’through Wichita Recordings on the 17th August 2009.

The album will be preceded by the single ‘Audacity Of Huge’ on the 3rd August 2009. ‘Audacity Of Huge’ features vocals from Chris Keating from the critically acclaimed Yeasayer.

‘Temporary Pleasure’ was recorded at the band’s studio in east London throughout 2008 and 2009, when the band weren’t busy touring their live show, DJing and producing. As well as representing the best of UK dance music the record contains some staggering pop anthems, featuring vocal contributions from the likes of Beth Ditto and Alexis Taylor. The album will be available on CD and deluxe limited edition CD.

Tracklist:

01. Cream Dream (featuring Gruff Rhys)
02. Audacity of Huge (featuring Chris Keating)
03. 10000 Horses Can’t Be Wrong
04. Cruel Intentions (featuring Beth Ditto)
05. Off The Map (featuring Jamie Lidell)
06. Synthesise
07. Bad Blood (featuring Alexis Taylor)
08. Turn Up The Dial (featuring Young Fathers)
09. Ambulance
10. Pinball (featuring Telepathe)

Tracks review

1. Cream Dream (featuring Gruff Rhys): is an ode to ’70s rock fused with ’80s pop. Honestly,Cream Dream is slightly catchy through the use of falsetto vocals but as a whole lacks real re-playability. It is also a questionable track to begin Temporary Pleasure.

2. Audacity of Huge (featuring Chris Keating): sounds like more of an experimental track than a serious track. Simply, the song could have done without the vocals. The blippy, goofy beat is top notch Simian, but the vocals are nettlesome.

3. 10000 Horses Can’t Be Wrong: is an electro piece, very minimal, and nothing too special.

4. Cruel Intentions (featuring Beth Ditto): is an r&b meets disco song from Temporary Pleasure. In this instance, the instrumentals work around the progression of the vocals; they are well synced and for what it’s worth, is pretty good. Beth Ditto’s vocals are quite sexy. Not my cup of tea, but reassuringly someone will drink it.

5. Off the Map (featuring Jamie Lidell): is an attractive track. The eerie yet goofy disco beat oozes Simian Mobile Disco and is easily identifiable as a dance track. The Jamie Liddell vocals are difficult to deny as appealing; very Jamiroquai (good thing).

6. Synthesize: takes it back to the jackin‘ Chicago house days. Though, to be relevant, synthesize is an appropriate word to be vocalized for music currently. Awesome.

7. Bad Blood (featuring Alexis Taylor): The initial exotic middle eastern vibe raises ear drums and as the vocals creep in, a pop song comes to fruition. Bad Blood easily captivates and is a must listen for Hot Chip fans.

8. Turn Up The Dial (featuring Young Fathers): is incorrect. Incorrect. Turn Up The Dialcarries the curse of electro fusion with rap. As most readers are aware, WDPK frowns upon such a movement so this track is dismissed.

9. Ambulance: is where the heart of Simian Mobile Disco truly beats. The blipps and goofy loops are at a climax for Temporary Pleasure with Ambulance. It is situated as the second last song off the album as if to say, “We’re sorry if some of the other tracks were sub par.

10. Pinball (featuring Telepathe): is the final track of the album and sounds like something The Knife or Fever Ray would perform though it would exist as one of the lesser liked tracks.

Arctic Monkeys’ HUMBUG album to be released on 24th August

The Arctic Monkeys’ much-anticipated third effort was co-produced by Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme and James Ford, who apart from his work in Simian Mobile Disco plays drums in Alex Turner’s other project, The Last Shadow Puppets. Early reports of the album took note of its more psychedelic sound, which Turner attributes to the band’s interest in Jimi Hendrix at the time of recording. Lead-off single “Crying Lightning” features the “laconic croon” more associated with The Last Shadow Puppets, along with stream-of-consciousness lyrics that hint at the evolution of Turner’s songwriting for the album. – from Matthew Blackwell, The Prefix Mag
